It is an inflammation of the liver, most often caused by a viral infection. There are five main hepatitis viruses, which are called A, B, C, D and E. In general, hepatitis A and E are caused by the ingestion of contaminated water or food. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur after parenteral contact with contaminated body fluids (for example, blood transfusions, or invasive medical procedures with contaminated equipment). Hepatitis B can also be transmitted sexually.
Symptoms of hepatitis are jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, very tired, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
